The Port Authority of Guam escalated to Port Heavy Weather Condition YANKEE Sunday morning following a U.S. Coast Guard declaration at 8 a.m., signaling that Tropical Storm-Force winds are expected within 24 hours as Sinlaku continues to approach the island.
Under Condition YANKEE, the port is closed to inbound traffic, all vessels greater than 200 tons must leave the harbor, and all cargo operations will cease within 12 hours.
Port personnel have secured key infrastructure, including the EQMR building, gantry cranes and all port load centers. Hazardous containers, refrigerated containers and remaining yard containers have also been secured.
"Condition YANKEE signals that we are entering a critical phase of storm readiness," said Port General Manager Rory J. Respicio. "We have taken the necessary steps to secure the Port and are focused on protecting our personnel and infrastructure."
Should conditions intensify further, the U.S. Coast Guard is expected to declare Condition ZULU, at which point all port operations will cease entirely.
The Port Authority of Guam said it will continue issuing updates as new information becomes available.
