The Guam Police Department is gearing up to conduct traffic direction at major intersections and junctions around the island a safety measure in light of power outages.
“We ask the community for their support and cooperation,” GPD said.
The department advised if a police officer or traffic control person is present, obey their hand signals.
However if no police personnel is present and traffic light are out GPD said “treat the intersection as a four-way or all-way stop. This means every driver must come to a complete stop before entering the intersection. “
GPD said “Right-of-Way Rules” apply.
“The first vehicle to come to a complete stop has the right-of-way to proceed first,” GPD said.
When multiple vehicles arrive at a stop simultaneously, GPD said, the driver on the left must yield to the driver on the right.
Vehicles at a stop executing a turn at the same time facing each other, GPD said the vehicle turning left must yield to the vehicle going straight.
“Do not assume other drivers know the rules or will stop for you. Use your turn signals early so other motorists know your planned path.”
All motorists should be alert for pedestrians.
“Look closely for pedestrians and bicyclists, who are much harder to see during power outages,” GPD said.
