Residents across Guam began reporting intermittent power outages Monday night as the National Weather Service confirmed the outer rainbands and wind field of Super Typhoon Sinlaku had reached the island.
Outages were reported in Chalan Pago, Piti, Talo'fo'fo and Hagat as conditions began to deteriorate with the storm's tropical storm-force winds of Sinlaku's outer rainbands and wind field.
The Guam Power Authority ahead of deteriorating conditions said it does not intend to shut down the island-wide power system and is working to keep portions of the system energized throughout the storm. However, the automatic system will cut power to affected circuits when damage is detected as a safety precaution.
"As damaging winds approach Guam, power outages will occur throughout the island," GPA said. "If power circuits go offline, GPA will work on energizing it immediately. If power doesn't return in a few minutes, it is most likely that the circuit is damaged and GPA will have to wait until the storm passes before it can make repairs."
GPA said crews are prepared to begin restoration as soon as winds drop to safe levels.
Residents are reminded to remain indoors and not venture outside until Condition of Readiness 4 is officially declared.
