OP-ED: Tourism's Success Becomes Guam's Success
By Randy Alcantara, Crowns Guam
Every visitor who comes to Guam leaves with memories. Many also leave with a piece of our island, whether it's apparel, locally made products, or gifts that remind them of their time here.
For businesses like Crowns Guam, tourism isn't just another industry. It's the foundation that allows local entrepreneurs to grow, create jobs, and invest back into our community.
When people talk about tourism, they often think about hotels, airlines, and restaurants. Those businesses are certainly important, but the impact reaches much further. The success of tourism trickles down to retailers, artists, printers, delivery services, event organizers, farmers, mechanics, and countless other small businesses that keep Guam's economy moving.
As the owner of Crowns Guam, I've experienced that firsthand. Every increase in visitor arrivals creates new opportunities to expand our product lines, hire local talent, improve our customer experience, and invest in new ideas. When tourism thrives, we have the confidence to grow.
When visitor numbers decline, small businesses feel it almost immediately.
Growth doesn't happen in isolation. Every new product we launch requires local designers, suppliers, vendors, and service providers. Every expansion creates opportunities for others.
That's the ripple effect of a healthy visitor industry.
Tourism also gives us something just as valuable as revenue: confidence. Confidence to sign another lease, purchase new equipment, introduce new collections, and build a stronger brand that proudly represents Guam to the world. That confidence comes from knowing there is a steady stream of customers who want to experience what our island has to offer.
Supporting tourism isn't just about attracting more visitors. It's about creating opportunities for local families, encouraging entrepreneurship, and building an economy where businesses can expand instead of simply trying to survive.
When tourists spend money in Guam, they aren't just supporting one business. They're supporting an entire network of local companies, employees, and families whose livelihoods depend on a vibrant economy.
The Tumon Night Market and Mad Collab are great examples of how tourism creates opportunities for local businesses. When organizations, businesses, and the community work together, everyone benefits, from entrepreneurs to residents to our visitors.
Tourism's success becomes Guam's success. As local business owners, we see that every day, and we're ready to continue growing alongside an industry that benefits all of us.
