The primary disaster debris site at Oka Point will permanently close Friday, May 1 at 6 p.m., the Government of Guam announced Monday, marking the conclusion of the primary cleanup phase following Typhoon Sinlaku.
Residents making final trips to Oka Point must arrive before 5:30 p.m., when entry lines will close to ensure all vehicles are cleared by the 6 p.m. cutoff. Closed-toe shoes and appropriate attire are strongly advised.
Following closure, residents must use regular curbside trash collection for household waste. Storm debris and green waste may not be placed in regular bins. The Guam Environmental Protection Agency reminded the public that illegal dumping on roadsides, in jungles or at closed site entrances carries fines of $1,000 or more and potential criminal penalties.
The Guam Fire Department said open burning of green waste — vegetation and yard trimmings only — is permitted without a permit between 6 a.m. and 6 p.m. Burn piles may not exceed 5 feet by 5 feet, a water source must be kept nearby, and residents must notify their nearest fire station before burning.
Several green waste sites across the island are also closing in the coming days. Sites in Hågat and Inalåhan close Wednesday, April 29. Sites in Tiyan, Assan-Maina, Malesso', Piti and Oka Point close Friday, May 1. Sites in Dededo, Humåtak, Talo'fo'fo and Yigo close Sunday, May 3. All sites operate daily from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. until their respective closing dates.
