Joint Information Center Officials are warning residents and visitors to stay completely out of the water as dangerous coastal conditions continue to batter Guam’s shorelines Wednesday, with life-threatening hazards expected to persist through the end of the week.
Coastal inundation of 2 to 3 feet is expected around times of high tide, with breaking waves pushing water significantly higher onto shore and causing increased shoreline erosion across the island’s coastline.
The combination of storm surge, large breaking waves and strong winds is driving water further inland than normal tidal patterns, posing serious dangers to anyone near beaches, cliffs, jetties, piers or other waterside areas.
Dangerous sea conditions — including powerful rip currents, large surf and elevated water levels — are expected to continue through the end of the week even as wind conditions gradually improve.
Residents are urged to stay away from all coastal areas, including beaches, shorelines and cliffs, until conditions are officially deemed safe. Do not attempt to sightsee storm impacts along the coastline.
Guam remains in Condition of Readiness 1. Do not go outside until COR 4 is officially declared.
