The Guam Police Department officer involved in a fatal collision with a motorcycle along Route 1 in Yigo has been placed on administrative leave, a GPD spokesperson confirmed Sunday.
GPD Spokesperson Norman Analista said once the Highway Patrol Division completes its investigation, findings will be forwarded to Internal Affairs for review.
“The case is still open and the investigation is ongoing,” Analista said July 12.
The crash occurred at around 2 a.m. on July 11 on Route 1 near American Grocery in Yigo. According to a GPD release, preliminary information indicates the motorcycle and patrol vehicle collided while traveling in the same lane.
“At around 2 a.m. on July 11, an officer was parked near the entrance of the American Grocery in Yigo. Upon hearing of a disturbance call, the officer motored onto the outer northbound lane of Route 1. A motorcycle was also motoring on the same lane and same time towards the officer and collided with the vehicle,” GPD said.
The Guam Fire Department responded to the scene and transported the motorcycle operator to Guam Memorial Hospital, where he later died from his injuries. Dr. Scott Ericksen pronounced the operator deceased at 2:15 a.m.
The identity of the motorcycle operator has not been released pending notification of next of kin. GPD’s Highway Patrol Division is leading the investigation.
