An off-duty police officer accused in a fatal hit-and-run case is no longer employed with the Guam Police Department, officials confirmed.
GPD spokesperson Officer Norman Analista said the officer, identified as Derrick Atan, resigned effective Feb. 20. He previously held the rank of Police Officer 1.
Atan is awaiting trial in Superior Court of Guam, where he faces a charge of vehicular homicide along with 18 additional offenses tied to the death of John Calors Daniel Yangco Haas, a bicyclist.
According to a magistrate’s complaint, Atan allegedly struck Haas with an orange Ford F-150 on Nov. 30, 2025, while under the influence of alcohol. Prosecutors allege he later attempted to stage a separate crash as a cover-up.
Court documents state investigators determined damage to the vehicle was inconsistent with Atan’s account and instead aligned with evidence from the fatal collision.
