Guam Delegate James Moylan said federal agencies are prepared to support Guam as Tropical Storm Sinlaku approaches, despite a partial federal government shutdown affecting the Department of Homeland Security.
In a statement released Saturday, Moylan said he received confirmation that the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) stands ready to assist the government of Guam in responding to potential storm impacts. The National Weather Service has placed Guam under a typhoon watch, with forecasts indicating Sinlaku could intensify into a Category 4 typhoon capable of causing significant damage.
“My office will continue to work with the relevant federal disaster response agencies to ensure that they are aware of the growing storm threat and are able to respond accordingly,” Moylan said. He added that his office will also keep the public informed as new developments arise.
Moylan said he has requested regular updates from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and is scheduled to receive a member-level briefing Monday as the storm advances. He also reached out to Gov. Lou Leon Guerrero to offer assistance in coordinating with federal partners and expressed support for the administration’s emergency declaration and efforts to secure $25 million in local funding for storm preparation and recovery.
“We are a very resilient community that has weathered many of these major storms through the years,” Moylan said. “I am confident that our local government leaders and workers, along with our federal partners, will do all they can to ensure a swift recovery.”
