Guam Delegate James Moylan is demanding answers from the Federal Emergency Management Agency over unresolved disaster assistance claims from Super Typhoon Mawar, which struck Guam nearly three years ago.
In a letter sent April 30 to Acting FEMA Administrator Karen Evans, Moylan requested a full accounting of outstanding individual assistance claims, asking specifically for the number of unresolved cases, FEMA's average processing timeline, steps being taken to improve communication with applicants and whether additional resources are being directed to Guam to address the backlog.
"Nearly three years after Super Typhoon Mawar, too many families are still waiting for answers," Moylan said. "Our people showed incredible resilience during one of the most difficult periods in Guam's recent history, but resilience should never be mistaken for acceptance of bureaucratic delays."
Moylan also raised concern that FEMA's ongoing response to Super Typhoon Sinlaku across the region could strain agency resources and further delay pending Mawar claims.
"While FEMA responds to new disasters across our region, Guam cannot be forgotten," Moylan said. "I am urging FEMA to ensure our island receives the staffing, attention, and administrative support necessary to finally close these cases and help families fully recover."
Moylan's office said it will continue monitoring FEMA's response until all outstanding cases are resolved.
