A 23-year-old man has been arrested in connection with a fatal two-vehicle crash in Dededo that claimed the lives of a woman and her 1-year-old daughter early Sunday morning, according to the Guam Police Department.
Police said John Mariano Moses was arrested on charges including two counts of vehicular homicide, leaving the scene with injuries or property damage, imprudent driving, speeding in a posted zone, driving without a license, and failure to stop before entering a through highway. The crash occurred at about 6:20 a.m. Dec. 21 at the intersection of Route 1 and South Chalan Henry Kaiser in Dededo.
Officers arriving at the scene found a white sedan and a red sedan that had collided. Police said Moses, the driver of the white sedan, fled the scene on foot before officers arrived. The occupants of the red sedan — identified as Charity Mina Berry, 30, her 1-year-old daughter, Minareen Immy, and an adult male driver — were transported to Guam Regional Medical City.
Berry and her daughter were later pronounced dead by emergency room doctors. The male driver of the red sedan remains hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries. Berry and Immy are Guam’s 20th and 21st traffic fatalities of the year, police said.
Guam Highway Patrol Division investigators searched for Moses, who later turned himself in to Dededo Precinct Command on the afternoon of Dec. 21. He was processed, booked and confined at the Department of Corrections, and the case was forwarded to the Office of the Attorney General. Police said speed and impaired driving are possible factors in the crash.
