A 30-year-old man is facing multiple felony and misdemeanor charges following a reported burglary and officer-involved shooting in Dededo, according to filings in the Superior Court of Guam.
Rico Jenoven Bacilins Wasisang is charged in CF0154-26 with second-degree burglary, theft of a firearm and theft of property. In a separate case, CF0155-26, he is charged with aggravated assault, two counts of assault on a peace officer, possession of a firearm without a firearms identification card, two counts of assault and two counts of reckless conduct.
According to affidavits of probable cause, officers with the Guam Police Department responded Feb. 23 to a reported burglary at a home on Hahasu Drive. A witness reported seeing Wasisang outside the residence moving items, including a flat-screen television. The homeowner later reported firearms and other property missing and a shattered bedroom window, court documents state.
Police said responding officers encountered Wasisang nearby and saw a firearm in his waistband. Officers gave commands to stop and drop the weapon. Court documents allege Wasisang pointed the firearm toward officers and a patrol vehicle. An officer fired four shots, striking him in the lower abdomen. Officers secured the firearm, handcuffed him and rendered aid before he was transported to Guam Regional Medical City for surgery.
In a subsequent interview, after being advised of his Miranda rights, Wasisang allegedly admitted breaking a window to enter the home and taking items, according to the affidavit.
A supplemental filing states though he was informed of his arrest Wasisang remained hospitalized in intensive care on Feb 26, and that a physician raised concerns about his ability to understand court proceedings.
During a magistrate hearing Friday, Judge Sean E. Brown ordered Wasisang committed on $3,000 cash bail in the burglary case and $7,000 cash bail in the assault case.
