As the island entered Condition of Readiness 1, crews from the Malesso Mayors office rushed to complete flood mitigation efforts near Hemlani’s Apartments, an area prone to flooding. Mayor Franklin Champaco and his crews have been working the past few days to dredge the river to allow for better flow into the ocean. He said, “it’s a temporary fix,” noting that long-term solutions to flooding in the area will require reconstructing the bridge, removing the pillars beneath and clearing bamboo plantations upriver.
