Magnitude 4.9 earthquake recorded northeast of Yigo

A 4.9-magnitude earthquake was recorded early Thursday morning northeast of Guam, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

The earthquake struck Thursday at 4:02 a.m. and was located about 64 kilometers northeast of Yigo Village, Guam, at a depth of 129 kilometers, the Guam Homeland Security/Office of Civil Defense reported.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center advised that the earthquake posed no tsunami threat to the Marianas. No major damage or injuries were reported following the shaking.

In a public advisory, the Offices of Guam Homeland Security and Civil Defense reminded residents of proper safety procedures during seismic events. “When an earthquake strikes, conduct the earthquake procedure, ‘Drop, Cover and Hold On’ until the shaking stops,” the agency said.

Officials encouraged the community to review earthquake preparedness information available through federal and local resources.
