Lawmakers reviewed two key appointments Thursday aimed at strengthening women’s advocacy and cultural preservation across the island.
The Committee on Child Welfare, Youth Affairs, Senior Citizens, Women’s Affairs, Disability Services, the Arts, Culture, Historic Preservation and Hagåtña Restoration held a public hearing on the nominations of Sarah Elmore-Hernandez and Lillian Gill.
Elmore-Hernandez is nominated to serve as director of the Guam Bureau of Women’s Affairs, an agency focused on advancing gender equity, supporting women and families, and coordinating programs related to economic opportunity, safety, leadership development and community advocacy.
Lawmakers also considered Gill’s nomination as a community representative on the board of the Guam Council on the Arts and Humanities Agency for a four-year term. Testimony highlighted the importance of community input in preserving CHamoru culture, expanding access to the arts and strengthening creative expression.
Both nominees addressed questions on their experience, vision and readiness to serve in roles tied to community empowerment and cultural stewardship.
Sen. Shelly Calvo, committee chairwoman, expressed optimism following the hearing, citing the nominees’ experience and commitment to giving back to Guam.
The committee is expected to continue its review process before making recommendations on the appointments.
