Gov. Lou Leon Guerrero and Lt. Gov. Josh Tenorio joined housing officials and community partners Monday to break ground on Phase II of the Lada Gardens renovation in Dededo, continuing the territory’s investment in affordable housing.
The project will renovate 16 low-income rental units at the 115-unit Lada Gardens complex, which was originally built in the 1960s. In 2022, 23 units were renovated during Phase I. Phase II includes six two-bedroom units, seven three-bedroom units and three four-bedroom units.
The renovation is being led by the Guam Housing Corporation in partnership with the Guam Housing and Urban Renewal Authority, with Genesis Tech serving as the contractor. Funding for Phase II includes $1.5 million in American Rescue Plan funds provided by the Leon Guerrero-Tenorio Administration after GHC requested assistance.
“When we entered this Administration, affordable housing was one of our first priorities,” Leon Guerrero said. “Our homes are where we care for our families and find stability at the end of the day. Investing in housing is investing in our people.”
Tenorio said demand for affordable housing remains high and emphasized the importance of Lada Gardens’ location near schools, public health services and a hospital.
“As our economy grows, we must address affordability while creating future pathways to homeownership and financing for our families,” Tenorio said.
A ribbon-cutting ceremony for the project will be scheduled once construction is complete.
