A Guam jury on Thursday convicted Rudy Fegurgur Quinata of first-degree murder in the 2021 killing of former Humatak Mayor Daniel Sanchez, following about 4.5 hours of deliberations in Superior Court.
The conviction in People v. Rudy Fegurgur Quinata, CF0177-21, marks what the Office of the Attorney General of Guam described as “Jury Trial Win #90” under Attorney General Douglas Moylan.
Prosecutors said they will seek life imprisonment without parole at sentencing before Judge Vernon P. Perez.
According to court documents, police responded to a welfare check at a residence in Humåtak on April 3, 2021, where officers discovered Sanchez’s body inside Quinata’s home. Investigators reported Sanchez suffered severe blunt force trauma injuries and stab wounds. A hammer and scissors allegedly covered in blood were recovered near the body.
Chief Prosecutor Curtis C. Van de Veld said the verdict followed a lengthy legal process.
“This conviction sends a clear message that violent criminals cannot escape accountability through delay tactics, retrials, or attacks on witnesses,” Van de Veld stated.
AG Prosecutor Jay W. Trumble added, “This was not a quick or easy process. The People of Guam fought through a retrial, weathered delays, and every legal challenge thrown at this prosecution team. In the end, truth prevailed.”
The original complaint also charged Joyner Scott Sked in connection with the case.
