The Office of Guam Homeland Security and the Office of Civil Defense are warning the public to be vigilant following reports of a phishing email circulating among government users.
Officials said the Office of Technology, along with the Mariana Regional Fusion Center, received reports of a purported email attempting to get recipients to click a link to access documents. Authorities believe the message is a scam designed to prompt further engagement.
Phishing emails often appear as internal IT requests, payroll updates or urgent notices about unpaid invoices. Homeland Security officials urged users to verify the sender’s address for domain spoofing, analyze the tone for unnecessary panic and avoid clicking suspicious links.
“Do not click links, open attachments, or reply to the sender,” the release stated. Recipients are advised to use the “Report Phishing” feature in their email client and, for Government of Guam agencies, follow guidance posted by OTECH. After reporting, users should delete the message from their inbox and trash folder.
Officials emphasized that OTECH will never request passwords or multi-factor authentication codes by email or chat.
