Residents of Hågat may soon see the return of a local post office after more than three years without one, following confirmation that the United States Postal Service is moving forward with plans to construct a permanent facility in the southern village.
According to the office of Delegate James Moylan, USPS Government Relations officials recently confirmed the project is advancing after securing a ground lease and beginning the design phase.
The former Hågat Post Office, located on San Vicente Street, closed in June 2022 due to major safety concerns, including mold, structural damage and a leaking roof. Since then, residents with post office boxes have had to travel to the post office in Hagåtña to retrieve their mail.
Moylan said his office began working on the issue after hearing concerns from Hågat residents following the temporary closure.
“Hågat residents asked me to look into this matter after the temporary closure was put in place over three years ago and my office intervened,” Moylan said. “We inquired and steadily pushed for the reopening of the Hågat post office, and now it’s about to come to fruition.”
Local leaders say the development is an important step toward restoring a vital service for the community.
“As a united community of Hågat, we are confident that the long-awaited resolution of the post office situation will be achieved in the coming months,” said Kevin Susuico, mayor of Hågat.
Officials say the proposed site for the new facility is the old fire station property in Hågat. Additional details, including construction timelines, will be announced once they are finalized by the USPS.
