Guam's Department of Public Health and Social Services reported 16 total whooping cough cases on the island as of May 26, including one new lab-confirmed case, according to a public health update released Tuesday.
Of the 16 cumulative cases recorded in 2026, three individuals were previously hospitalized and three additional cases were identified through epidemiologic links.
Health officials are urging residents of all ages to get vaccinated and have announced two free upcoming pertussis immunization clinics:
May 29 at Dededo Park Gym from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., and May 30 at the Back-to-School and Pertussis Immunization Clinic at the Southern Region Community Health Center in Inalåhan from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Pertussis, commonly known as whooping cough, is a highly contagious respiratory illness. Recommended vaccines vary by age group: DTap for children at 2, 4, and 6 months, and again between 15 to 18 months and 4 to 6 years; Tdap for preteens ages 11 through 12; Tdap for pregnant women during the 27th through 36th week of pregnancy; and Tdap for adults who have never received it.
