Guam remained under Condition of Readiness 1 Wednesday morning as Typhoon Sinlaku’s slow movement continued to subject the island to an extended battering of damaging winds and heavy rain, with no immediate relief in sight.
The Joint Information Center warned residents the storm is an “extended period event,” with tropical storm force winds expected to persist well into Wednesday evening after sunset. Gusts up to 75 mph were forecast through at least late morning, with sustained winds of 40 to 60 mph gradually easing to between 25 and 40 mph by afternoon.
Residents are ordered to remain indoors until the Governor officially declares COR 4. Joint Region Marianas remains at TCCOR 1E, with installation access points closed except for the U.S. Naval Hospital Guam emergency department.
As of 5 a.m., Sinlaku was located approximately 125 miles north-northeast of Guam at 15.2N, 145.4E, moving northwest at 5 mph with maximum sustained winds of 145 mph. The storm is pulling away from Tinian and Saipan and is forecast to track through the northern CNMI, passing west of Alamagan, Pagan and Agrihan later this week.
Guam remains under both a tropical storm warning and a typhoon watch.
Officials stressed that sea conditions remain life-threatening and dangerous surf is expected through the end of the week.
