Guam Police Chief Stephen C. Ignacio has died, Gov. Lou Leon Guerrero and Acting Governor Josh Tenorio announced Tuesday, mourning the loss of a law enforcement leader who served the island for more than three decades.
"Chief Ignacio's passing is a profound loss for Guam," the governor and acting governor said in a joint statement. "For more than three decades, he dedicated his life to protecting our people and serving this island with honor, integrity, and unwavering commitment."
The administration described Ignacio as a mentor and steady leader known to generations of officers, and a public servant who carried out his duties with professionalism and humility. "His contributions to public safety and to the Guam Police Department leave a legacy that will be felt for generations," the release said.
Police Commander Col. Joe Carbullido was appointed Acting Chief of Police on Monday to ensure continuity of leadership within the department, the statement said. Major Andrew Quitugua is serving as acting director of the Department of Corrections.
The governor and acting governor extended condolences to Ignacio's children, grandchildren, family and friends, as well as to the men and women of the Guam Police Department. "Guam is safer, stronger, and better because of his service," they said.
