Guam leaders and party officials issued sharply contrasting statements following President Donald Trump’s 2026 State of the Union address, underscoring national political divides reflected locally.

Guam Delegate James Moylan said the president’s remarks aligned with priorities that resonate with Guam, including national security, economic stability and support for servicemembers.

“As a veteran, I appreciated the President’s acknowledgment of the men and women who serve,” Moylan said, noting Guam’s high rate of military service. He added that efforts to lower prescription drug costs, improve public safety and protect federal programs from fraud have direct impact on Guam families.

In a separate release from the Democratic Party of Guam, other leaders expressed disappointment.

“As we watched the President’s State of the Union Address this afternoon, we were immediately reminded that everyone views life and what is happening around them from their own perspective,” the statement read. The authors said they had hoped to hear plans addressing rising grocery and healthcare costs and the growing challenge of homeownership for middle- and low-income families.

“We had hoped to hear that, despite our differences in ideology, that the President would work to find common ground,” the statement continued. “Instead, what we heard was a commitment to inflexibility.”

The statement criticized what it described as divisive rhetoric but concluded on a note of optimism: “Because of who we are and our unique journey as members of the American family, from our perspective, we must remain hopeful.”

Meanwhile, the Republican Party of Guam praised the address.

“As America begins this year of celebrating its 250th birthday, President Trump delivered a State of the Union address that all Americans can be proud of,” the party said in a release. The statement cited falling crime, lower drug prices and border security, and said Guam would benefit from the administration’s economic leadership, including attention to federal cost-of-living policies.

“President Trump is turning the page on the highest inflation in 40 years … while delivering real price relief to American families,” the party said. “Guam will play a key part of America’s Golden Age.”

The range of responses highlights how federal policy debates continue to shape political discourse on Guam.
