Guam Regional Medical City announced that Dr. Gamaliel Jesse Ferrer, a GRMC family medicine hospitalist, has earned board certification through the American Board of Obesity Medicine, making him Guam's only board-certified obesity medicine specialist.

Ferrer earned his Doctor of Medicine degree from De La Salle Health Sciences Institute in the Philippines and completed his Family Medicine Residency through the University of Minnesota/CentraCare Saint Cloud Hospital. He has been with GRMC since 2023, bringing clinical experience in family medicine, primary care, urgent care and hospital medicine.

GRMC said the certification expands specialized healthcare locally as the island faces growing rates of obesity and related chronic conditions. Obesity medicine focuses on evidence-based treatment for obesity and associated conditions such as diabetes, hypertension, cardiovascular disease and sleep apnea, with training in nutrition, physical activity, behavioral therapy and medical management.

"Dr. Ferrer's achievement is a tremendous milestone not only for GRMC, but for Guam's healthcare community as a whole," said GRMC Chief Medical Officer Dr. Edison Manaloto. "Having Guam's only board-certified obesity medicine specialist practicing locally expands access to comprehensive, evidence-based care for our patients and community."

Ferrer said his goal is to help patients improve their health while keeping specialized treatment available on island. "Obesity is one of the most significant health challenges affecting our community and is closely connected to many chronic diseases we see every day," he said.
