Guam Regional Medical City (GRMC) has introduced a pain management treatment to its services with the launch of the Inceptiv™ Spinal Cord Stimulator (SCS), a Medtronic innovation recently named one of TIME’s Best Inventions of 2024. The FDA-approved technology, now available at GRMC, offers relief for patients with diabetic peripheral neuropathy (DPN) and other chronic nerve-related pain conditions.
The Inceptiv™ system is distinguished by its closed-loop sensing technology, which automatically adjusts stimulation up to 3,000 times per minute to match a patient’s body movements and needs. Unlike traditional stimulators that deliver a fixed output, this system “listens” to the body and provides consistent therapy. “This technology represents a breakthrough for patients who have tried medications, injections, or other pain management options without success,” said GRMC neurosurgeon Dr. Scott Dulebohn.
With diabetes affecting thousands of residents on Guam, the breakthrough is particularly significant for those suffering from diabetic nerve pain in the feet and legs, a condition that often resists medication. “Many people don’t realize that diabetic nerve pain can now be treated with advanced, non-drug therapy,” said Jake Ryan, a Medtronic representative. Beyond DPN, Inceptiv™ has also shown effectiveness in managing chronic back pain, sciatica, post-surgical nerve pain, and conditions such as Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS).
The therapy begins with a minimally invasive trial lasting three to five days before patients commit to a permanent implant. Dr. Dulebohn emphasized its benefits as a drug-free alternative, reducing reliance on pain medications and their side effects. “We’re proud to be the first on Guam to offer this advanced therapy, giving our community access to world-class, patient-centered pain relief,” he said.
