The Guam Power Authority warned residents Monday to expect widespread power outages and fluctuations as Super Typhoon Sinlaku bears down on the island, while confirming crews will stand down once conditions become unsafe and resume repairs as soon as winds subside.
GPA said crews have spent the past week addressing outages, fluctuations and vegetation management across the island’s northern, central and southern villages. Once management determines conditions are no longer safe, crews will secure operations until winds drop to safe levels.
The authority emphasized it does not intend to shut down the island-wide power system. The system runs automatically and only cuts power when damage occurs to individual circuits.
“GPA’s goal is to keep part of the system running throughout the storm because it will allow for faster post-storm recovery,” the authority said.
Residents were advised that if power goes out and does not return within a few minutes, the circuit is likely damaged and repairs will have to wait until the storm passes.
GPA said its teams are prepared to begin restoration immediately once winds decrease to safe levels.
Residents are reminded not to run generators indoors or near living quarters to avoid carbon monoxide poisoning, and to exercise caution around downed power lines following the storm.
