The Guam Power Authority (GPA) is calling on residents and businesses to conserve electricity during peak evening hours as the island’s power system faces limited generation capacity. Officials warned Friday that partial rotating outages could begin as early as tonight.
From 5 p.m. to 11 p.m., GPA is asking customers to limit air conditioning use, switch off water heaters, and reduce nonessential power consumption. The utility said conservation measures can help reduce demand and possibly prevent rotating outages lasting up to one hour.
The Ukudu Power Plant, which had been supplementing the grid during testing, is offline until later this weekend or early next week. Meanwhile, Cabras #1 remains down for repairs, though it is expected back in service next week. GPA reported that Dededo CT #1 and Piti #7 are nearing completion of maintenance and should return online this weekend.
While assuring customers that outages would be a last resort, GPA acknowledged the inconvenience and pledged to restore power as quickly as possible. Residents can access GPA’s suite of energy-monitoring tools and conservation resources online, including MyEnergyGuam, Energy Sense, and Beat the Peak, for tips on reducing usage.
