Guam Power Authority line crews continued working Monday evening to restore power across the island’s northern, central and southern sectors as weather conditions from Super Typhoon Sinlaku began to deteriorate, the agency announced.
GPA said outages and fluctuations began occurring as conditions worsened earlier Monday. Restoration efforts are being conducted throughout the evening as conditions allow, with crews visible in various villages across the island.
The authority said crews will continue operations until conditions are no longer deemed safe, at which point they will stand down and resume repairs once winds subside to safe levels.
Residents are reminded that power restoration following a typhoon follows a prioritized sequence. GPA must first restore power generation at its plants, then repair transmission lines to substations, followed by distribution lines and power poles in neighborhoods, before service connections to individual homes can be restored.
GPA also warned residents to stay clear of downed or dangling power lines after the storm passes, noting that all fallen lines should be considered live. Electricity travels through standing water and can cause electrocution — residents should avoid flooded areas where power lines may be nearby.
Homeowners are also responsible for maintaining proper service connections from the weatherhead to the meter box. Damaged electrical components on the customer’s side of the meter are the homeowner’s responsibility to repair.
