JIC Release #19 | NWS Guam Update
Governor Lou Leon Guerrero was in active communication with federal and regional leaders Tuesday as Super Typhoon Sinlaku closed in on the Northern Marianas, while forecasters warned of a rapid and dangerous escalation of winds across Tinian and Saipan through the afternoon and evening.
As of 11:14 a.m., Sinlaku was 70 miles southeast of Saipan, moving northwest at 10 mph with maximum sustained winds of 165 mph — still a Category 5 super typhoon. Typhoon-Force winds are expected to reach Tinian and Saipan this afternoon with conditions rapidly worsening through the night.
“We have a very long afternoon, evening and night ahead of all of us,” NWS Guam warned.
Governor Leon Guerrero conducted a conference call with acting FEMA Administrator Karen Evans, expressing thanks for the deployment of federal personnel and President Donald Trump’s approval of her pre-landfall Presidential Emergency Declaration, which authorized FEMA to coordinate disaster relief under Title V of the Stafford Act.
The governor also reached out to CNMI Governor David Apatang to extend prayers and assure him Guam stands ready to assist. Hawaii Governor Josh Green called Tuesday to offer support if needed, with homeland security offices across the region in active coordination.
All residents across the Mariana Islands are ordered to remain in safe shelter through the storm’s full passage. Do not go outside until COR 4 is declared.
