Government of Guam agencies joined forces Saturday to support a clean up effort at the Guam Memorial Hospital Authority (GMHA), underscoring a renewed commitment to improving the island’s only public hospital. The cleanup and maintenance initiative was led by Interim CEO Dr. Joleen Aguon, in collaboration with Governor Lourdes A. Leon Guerrero, Lt. Governor Joshua F. Tenorio, and key agencies including the Guam Fire Department, Guam Police Department, and Department of Public Works.
Senator Sabrina Salas Matanane, chairperson of the Committee on Health and Veterans Affairs, commended the participating agencies and donated water for volunteers. “Your teamwork and community spirit truly make a difference,” she said, thanking Dr. Aguon for organizing the effort and for her ongoing commitment to GMH improvements. More cleanup and beautification projects are planned in the coming months as part of GMHA’s “It’s Our Hospital” campaign.
Dr. Aguon said the project reflects a deeper mission beyond maintenance. “This is more than a cleanup,” she said. “It’s about pride, teamwork, and care for the place where we heal our community.” Governor Leon Guerrero praised the cross-agency cooperation, adding that while the long-term goal remains building a new hospital, immediate action is essential to support hospital employees and patients. “We will not wait to take action where we can,” the governor said. “We owe it to our hospital employees who give so much, and to every patient and family who comes through those doors.”
The initiative follows recent partnerships between GMHA and other GovGuam agencies, including a project with the Guam Power Authority to upgrade the hospital’s electrical system.
