Guam Memorial Hospital Authority resumed normal visitation hours following a smoke incident reported Saturday on the hospital’s third floor in the telemetry area, officials said.
According to GMHA, visitation was reinstated after the Facilities Maintenance team conducted thorough assessments and confirmed all systems were safe. The Guam Fire Department and Guam Power Authority were on site to support response efforts led by hospital staff.
“I want to express my heartfelt gratitude to our staff for the calm and compassionate way they responded today,” Interim CEO Dr. Joleen M. Aguon said, noting that patient safety was the immediate priority and thanking patients and families for their patience and trust.
Gov. Lou Leon Guerrero and Lt. Gov. Josh Tenorio, who both visited the hospital during the response, praised GMHA’s leadership and staff for acting swiftly and professionally, while acknowledging the support provided by GFD and GPA. GMHA said it will continue to provide updates as needed and remains committed to the safety of patients, staff and the community.
Hospital officials reported traced the source of the smoke to a motor precooling unit which burnt out. No fire was involved; however, smoke impacted two unoccupied rooms.
