The Guam Memorial Hospital Authority has earned the 2026 CNOR Strong designation, a national recognition for facilities that demonstrate a commitment to perioperative nursing excellence and patient safety.
GMHA said the designation is awarded by the Competency and Credentialing Institute to hospitals where at least 50% of eligible operating room nurses hold CNOR certification, a national credential for perioperative nursing.
Perioperative nurses provide care to patients before, during and after surgery, working in operating rooms and recovery areas to prepare patients, assist surgical teams and monitor recovery from anesthesia, GMHA said.
“This recognition is a reflection of the people who stand beside patients in some of their most vulnerable moments,” Interim Chief Executive Officer and Administrator Dr. Joleen M. Aguon said in a statement, noting the role of nurses in ensuring calm, precision and compassion during surgical care.
Hospital Unit Supervisor Genevieve Austria said the designation reflects the dedication and professionalism of GMHA’s operating room and post-anesthesia care unit teams, as well as a shared commitment to patient safety and continued professional growth.
Gov. Lou Leon Guerrero said the recognition reflects GMHA’s ongoing commitment to safe care for Guam’s residents. Lt. Gov. Josh Tenorio added that professional certification strengthens healthcare delivery across the island.
The CNOR Strong designation is awarded annually and recognizes healthcare organizations that prioritize certification and professional development among surgical nursing staff.
