The Guam Memorial Hospital Authority (GMHA) has launched a major capital improvement project to strengthen the island’s only public hospital, breaking ground Wednesday on its Roof and Envelope Restoration Initiative. The project will upgrade the hospital’s roof, exterior walls, and typhoon shutters across all four floors, reinforcing the facility against Guam’s harsh weather conditions.
GMHA Interim Administrator Dr. Joleen M. Aguon said the restoration is part of a broader effort to modernize and safeguard hospital operations. “This groundbreaking marks another milestone in strengthening our hospital, not just for today, but for generations to come,” Aguon said. “We are not only restoring a building. We are restoring hope, trust, and strength in Guam’s public hospital. Because this is Our Hospital, Our Mission, and Our Island.”
Governor Lou Leon Guerrero praised GMHA’s continued progress in improving infrastructure and services, calling the initiative an investment in safety and sustainability. “While our ultimate goal is to build a new hospital for the people of Guam, we must continue to build up and fortify the facility we have today,” she said. “Every upgrade ensures our patients and healthcare workers have a safe, reliable place to turn to.”
Lieutenant Governor Josh Tenorio emphasized the collaboration behind the effort, saying, “This initiative reflects what we can accomplish when government, healthcare professionals, and our community work together. We’re investing not only in infrastructure but in our healthcare workforce and systems. Together, we are building a stronger hospital for a stronger Guam.”
The project is part of GMHA’s ongoing capital improvement plan to modernize facilities, ensure operational continuity during disasters, and enhance safety and comfort for patients, staff, and visitors.
