The Mariana Regional Fusion Center issued an advisory Monday warning residents to guard against scams, price gouging and criminal exploitation as Super Typhoon Sinlaku approaches and recovery efforts loom.
Price Gouging
With a State of Emergency declared, prices for essential goods — fuel, water, batteries and lumber — are legally frozen. Charging inflated prices is a crime and should be reported immediately.
Contractor Fraud
After the storm, beware of unlicensed individuals going door-to-door offering fast-track repairs or debris removal, typically demanding cash upfront. Never pay in full before work is completed and verified.
Impersonation and Phishing
Scammers may pose as FEMA, GPA, GWA or law enforcement demanding “service restoration fees.” All legitimate government aid and damage inspections are free. Disregard any texts or emails about Sinlaku relief asking you to click links — these are designed to steal personal data.
Report Suspicious Activity
Residents should report anyone using fake badges or unofficial uniforms to access restricted areas, photographing critical infrastructure, probing utility sites or stealing emergency supplies.
Rely only on official sources for storm information. Social media misinformation can hinder emergency response.
