A flash flood warning is in effect until 5:30 p.m. for southeastern and south central Guam according to a release from the Guam Homeland Security, Office of Civil Defense stated on Friday.
The flash flood warning comes as doppler radar indicates thunderstorms in the area are producing “heavy rain across the warned area.”
“Between 0.8 and 1.6 inches of rain have fallen, with rainfall rates of 1 to 2.5 inches in 90 minutes and additional amounts of 1 to 3 inches possible,” GHS-OCD official said.
The warning means that flash flooding of small creeks and streams, urban areas, highways, streets, underpasses, and other poor drainage and low-lying areas is expected.
“Locations that will experience flash flooding include Talofofo, Inarajan, and Merizo,” GHS-OCD said.
A flash flood advisory is also in effect for south-central Guam until 5:15 p.m. along with a separate flood advisory for northeastern Guam until 4:45 p.m. GHS-OCD noted that the separate flood advisory is in effect from Dededo to Anderson Air Force Base.
Residents are advised to take precaution by avoiding flooded roads, and low-water crossings that “are dangerous in heavy rain.”
The high surf advisory and Small craft advisory has been extended until 4 a.m. Saturday, officials noting that high rip currents remain a risk through the night.
“Large breaking waves up to 10 feet and life-threatening rip currents continue along north, south, and west facing reefs as swells from Typhoon Bavi (09W) diminish. Residents should stay out of the water due to dangerous surf and rip currents. Inexperienced mariners, especially those operating smaller vessels, should avoid boating in hazardous conditions,” GHS-OCD said.
