Stefan Camacho who was found guilty of his role in the 2024 murder of a Korean tourist will spend 15 years in prison.
Superior Court Judge John Terlaje handed down the sentence on Friday. Camacho received 10 years for the robbery charge and five years for the Vulnerable Victim Enhancement.
"While the one-year sentences for Theft and Destruction of Evidence run concurrently with the robbery sentence," Attorney General Douglas Moylan said in a release following the sentencing hearing.
The sentence is only a fraction of AG's 52-year request.
“While respecting the Judge’s discretion, the People of Guam believed that the maximum 52 years was warranted and was the sentence Camacho deserved for his knowing role in this violent crime.” Moylan said. “Camacho helped plan the robbery, drove his co-actor to the crime victims, took his share of the stolen proceeds, and helped conceal the evidence after an innocent husband and father was shot and killed.”
Camacho was the driver in the case while the gunman, Keoki Santos died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound five-days after the Jan. 4, 2024, incident as police attempted to take him into custody.
The family of the victim, Hea Jun Hwang were not present for the hearing. Moylan said, “The Hwang family was too traumatized and horrified by what happened to return to Guam and appear in person at the sentencing hearing. They should have left Guam with memories of a retirement celebration, not the memory of a husband and father being murdered on vacation.”
