A line of cars stretched along Marine Corps Drive Tuesday afternoon as the first drive-through distribution of food commodities for families affected by Super Typhoon Bavi got underway at Adelup, with the Department of Public Health and Social Services reporting 1,000 bags prepared to be distributed during the event.
DPHSS’ Division of Homelessness Assistance and Poverty Prevention hosted the event, with Deputy Director Amanda Shelton on site helping pass out nutritional aid.
“If any family has lost food during the typhoon, we are here to provide some assistance with non-perishable goods being passed out today. Today, we have about 1,000 bags ready, and people are lined up, already to Marine Drive here at Adelup,” Shelton told Guam News Network.
The food commodity bags include fruits, vegetables, meat, rice and milk — “all of the essential things that you need to make a meal for you and your family,” Shelton said.
“This is going to be a big help for a lot of people who lost food, especially if your power’s been out for about a week now, or you already lost everything in your fridge. We hope that this will be able to help you feed your families,” Shelton said.
Reporting “a good turnout” early on, Shelton anticipated handing out all 1,000 bags and distributing another 1,000 on Thursday.
Additional distributions are scheduled at the Yigo Gym on Thursday from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. and at the Malojloj Social Hall in Inalåhan on Saturday from 9 a.m. to noon.
