The Guam Department of Agriculture is advising the public to remain alert for box jellyfish in coastal waters and along shorelines during several periods over the coming months.
The department’s Division of Aquatic and Wildlife Resources said in a news release that box jellyfish may be present in the water or washed up on beaches, particularly on reef flats.
Officials anticipate box jellyfish presence on the following dates: Feb. 9–11, March 11–13, April 10–12 and May 10–12.
Even when washed ashore and no longer alive, box jellyfish can still sting, the agency warned. Beachgoers, swimmers and fishermen are urged to use caution during those periods.
The public is asked to report sightings to the Department of Agriculture by calling 671-735-0289, 671-735-0294 or 671-735-3982, or by emailing brent.tibbatts@doag.guam.gov, according to the release.
